Hamsters of the future

syrian hammyLately, I’ve wanted to start taking Alfie downstairs (Her cage is in my room). I think it would be more fun to have her on my lap while I hamster carwatch T.V or let her run around while I talk to my family. This is one option that Alfie seems to like ok, but I’m struggling to find more fun things. Of course there’s the usual, playpens, the bathtub, on your lap, etc – which all get a bit boring after a while. Petshops sometimes sell “hamster harnesses” but these can be a bit iffy. Because of their small frame, a hamster may break a bone or two if you try to take them out on a walk, but they do work for some people, and if your hammy likes them, I don’t see a problem. But I’m not sure. Alfie doesn’t play with many toys when she’s outside her cage, so playpens and bathtubs are a bit lost on her. Maybe I should make a “Hammy treadmill” for her to run on. That’d be funny, but my DIY skills may not rise to the occasion…

With my dwarf hamster, Pip, there is only one option. Bathtub. He’s too speedy to be let free, as I’d never get him back again, so the bathtub is great. He loves the toys I put in and I can handle him easily in there. Plain and simple. But there is so much more opportunity with a Syrian. That’s not to say Dwarfs aren’t fun, it’s just Pip likes one thing, and likes to stick to it. With Alfie however, I can carry her around and play with her outside the tub or cage. This, I think, has made me restless. I’m spoilt now! I want more! Next thing, you’ll see Alfie prancing around in a tutu.hamster harness

I wish there was more fun things to do with hamsters. There are lots of options for dogs and cats. Why not hamsters? So from now on, I am on a mission. A mission to expand the world of hamsters. By the time I’m finished, I’ll have hamster bikes, playgrounds, electric scooters. I am determined to make hamsters the dog or cat of 2012. So by the time I’m finished with them, they’ll have built empires, be travelling around the world, and have successful businesses.

  1. AAAAAAAAAAAGGGHHHHH!!!! I love your blog by the way, only started reading it yesterday, but I find it a most facinating, informative and well written insight into the wonderful world of hammys. By the way, the “AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGG! was to express my disappointment that several of the pages “taming” “hamster care” “hamster names” do not exist….
I am a new reader of the hamster place (a blog about hamsters)! I only discovered it but so far so good it’s wonderful! I’ll be checking back every day to look for new posts!!
    Yours truly,
    Josephine! 😀
